GIS, an Atlas at Your Fingertips - Master QGIS and Spatial Data
A practical course to learn how to digitize and process geographic data with QGIS, creating maps and 3D models. Ideal for beginners, it provides essential skills to explore and visualize geographic information professionally.
Format and Calendar
A weekly session, every Saturday from 10:00 to 12:00 for 5 lessons. First lesson on January 11, 2025, and last lesson on February 8, 2025.
What you'll learn
"GIS, an Atlas at Your Fingertips" is a practical and comprehensive course designed to guide participants into the world of GIS (Geographic Information System) through the use of the powerful open-source software, QGIS. This course is ideal for anyone, even those with no prior experience in GIS, and offers a solid foundation to acquire the essential skills needed to work with geographic data effectively and professionally.
Throughout the course, you will explore how GIS can transform raw geographic data into impactful visual information and digital maps, applicable in various fields, from environmental analysis to spatial planning, marketing to demographic data monitoring. You’ll discover how to access and manage major geographic databases, work with linear, polygonal, or point data, and enrich your projects with customized attributes, whether textual or numerical information.
One of the unique aspects of this course is its practical approach: you’ll not only receive a basic theoretical overview but also have the chance to work directly with QGIS through guided exercises. You’ll learn to download and integrate data from geoportals, manage different data types (shapefiles, attribute tables, and more), and use symbology and categorization to make data understandable and visually appealing.
Finally, the course introduces the creation of three-dimensional terrain models (DTM, DSM, and DEM), ideal for those looking to enhance their skills with advanced landscape and environmental representation tools. By the end of the lessons, you’ll be able to create customized GIS projects, ready for export and use in your own work or professional presentations.
